The American artist Sandra Binion presents the double exhibition Distilled / In Search of Emma, two photographic series that respond to Gustave Flaubert's work, Madame Bovary. Far from a conventional adaptation, Sandra Binion proposes a subtle and poetic retranscription of the images and details derived from the novel. Distilled, exhibited repeatedly since 2014 in the United States, France and Japan, is here reduced to its original core: twenty-six photographs. In Search of Emma is an amplification of Distilled. We can think of it as the whimsical casting of an imaginary film. While the artist was in Kyoto in 2019, she saw new images and scenes, which related to Distilled in the manner of ghosts of the original exhibition and Emma Bovary, and she concentrated them into twenty images.
