Salammbô, Colloquium, antiquity and modernity

L’événement présenté est soumis à l'évolution de la situation sanitaire liée à la pandémie de Covid-19.

From June 28 to 30, dive into the heart of Salammbô, the cult work of Gustave Flaubert, thanks to the «Salammbô. Antiquity and modernity» meetings. In connection with the flagship exhibition of the year 2021 Salammbô Fureur! Passion! Elephants! , this online event is dedicated to the ambivalent character of the novel between historicity and contemporaneity. It is organized as part of the celebrations of the bicentenary of Flaubert by the Meeting of Metropolitan Museums and the University of Rouen. These three days are dedicated to the various «news» of the work Salammbô: on political violence, sacrifice, eroticism and on what Flaubert saw as «modern barbarism»; on the new vision of Africa of Flaubert; on the place of Salammbô in the history of antiquity, of archaeology, even in the contemporary history of Tunisia; on the «visionary» power of the work developed by the multiple illustrations and adaptations that have been made of it. These meetings are also an opportunity to present several aspects of historical and archaeological research on the Carthaginian city. They evoke, on the one hand, examples of «contamination» of artistic representations in the historical discipline and, on the other hand, present recent advances in research on the Punic city.

The video conference takes place on Zoom. The link will be sent to you the day before each day. Registration required on https://evento.renater.fr/survey/salammbo-antiquite-et-modernite-703wq0dn
