Flaubert’s attachment to Normandy – in particular to Rouen, where he was born and did much
of his writing – makes him an important figure in Normandy’s history. From spring 2021 to
summer 2022, the region will host a varied programme of events to celebrate the bicentenary
of Flaubert’s birth, with around 150 initiatives including exhibitions, shows, dramatised
walking tours and other educational activities, many of which will take place in the places
across the region that held particular importance for Flaubert.
A 15-month cultural programme has by Rouen, the village of Ry, Canteleu,
Lyons-la-Forêt, Le Havre, Evreux, Deauville, the departments of Seine-Maritime and Eure, the
Université de Rouen-Normandie and the Normandy Region. The programme’s aim is to
promote Flaubert and Normandy both nationally and internationally through publicly and
privately-funded cultural initiatives. Key actors from the local arts, culture, tourism and
academic sectors have also helped to make this exciting programme of events possible.
